Tips and Tricks: How to deal with auto rickshaw in BLR

Posted in Bangaluru, Personal, Travel by Kartik Mistry on April 17th, 2008

* Bubulle and Sam has already seen it. But, if you ever likely to coming down to BLR this tips and tricks can be useful. So, print it out!

- Do not catch rickshaw on one-way. Even if your offer 1000 INR, they will not come to place where traffic is terrible.

- Do not ask them where cop/policeman is not near.

- Do not catch auto near biggie place like MG Road. They are smart and they will tell you tripple amount of fare because they know that people near these places are rich and can pay whatever they tell.

- Keep your half of your budget for traveling inside BLR, half for rest of the things (like airfare, shoppings etc).

- Learn Kanndda properly, if not, do not speak in Hindi.

- Keep asking to auto drivers, probably after 45 or 50 tries you will get auto which will come with proper meter based fare.

- The last advice: Hire a bicycle. Good for health, Good for brain.

PS: This post is due to our (/me and Kushal’s) frustration of tomorrow’s attempt to get auto from Residency road to Ulsoor.

kthnx.

Last time i visited Bangaore there was an autorickshaw stand at MG road.

Anyway the big problem of meters is that the driver is forced to drive in circles to extract extra money. If you pay a fixed price then he will drive the shortest path. :)

I’ve managed to get an autorickshaw with a meter running exactly once. I was amazed.

I used to walk from Residency Road to MG Road. I got to pissed off with the drivers to haggle/quarrelt with them.

Welcome to BLR :) Atleast you dont have to worry about drunken drivers kidnapping/assaulting you. Anyway here is some highly imperfect Kannada phrases i use :
    1] hogthira (will you go)?
2] neevu yelli hogthini ? - where are you going?
3] illi stop mad beku (stop here, yahan ruko)
4] munde left/right hogi (go left ahead, aage right/left maro)
    5] yeenu ? - why ?
6] tumbha jasti aagite (its too much (fare) -bahut zyada hogaya)
    7] beda (no, nahin chahiye)
8] Ee road-nalli hogi (go by this road, ye road se jao)
    9] beejar aagite (am irritated)
    10] yeshtu ? how much ?

BTW, I have made the cop on the MG road get me an auto on metered fare. So go pester him, he will help with a constipated smile.
