Desktop or Netbook?

with 9 comments

* I am looking for either assembled desktop or netbook suitable for my wife` K`. She refused to use my Macbook :( even it will be unused during daytime after I will be joining new place/job from Monday!

She asked: What will be OS in it?

Me: Linux.

She: Oh!

Me: What will you do with that machine?

She: Surfing, Email etc

Me: Then, why you should worry, dear :P

  1. Non glare 10 inch netbook. Samsung or Asus .. but you won’t get them with Linux :,(

  2. Why you don’t make a dual-boot system and let her the choice?
People have an unreasonable fear of linux.
In your place I would make a dual-boot and install GNOME with a mac theme (or KDE ;) ). When she doesn’t get the difference, she will lose the fear.

  3. AFAIK, there are currently no netbooks available with a GNU/Linux
    distro pre-installed. :-(

Why not use the Macbook? You surely paid good money for it and it can
probably run MacOSX if she really does not want to use Linux. :-(

MacOSX works fine with firefox, thunderbird, vlc and other FOSS
applications. You can almost forget that you are using a Mac (until
you have to use the one button mouse!)

  4. I forgot to note that I was using Mac OS X in my daytime job. It works fine but yeah, its not really what I wanted to use! I have dual-boot with Debian and Mac already..

She is only fearing that I will be angry if she will do something wrong to my precious Mac :P :P

  5. My wife still runs XP on her laptop pretty much purely because of Netflix’s online video player. It uses Silverlight + DRM, so afaict the chances of getting it running well under Linux natively are slim to none.

Even if Wine could run MS .Net (as Moonlight won’t implement the DRM bits of Silverlight), her laptop is old enough that I doubt it would be usable. Even under XP it stutters a bit, and I’ve always felt XP’s graphics (especially video playback) are slightly more performant than Linux’s.

  6. Here is the deal:
A netbook and a decent desktop cost the same, ie. around 22K. ( My friend got a Core2Duo 2.8 Ghz,2 GB Ram, 250G HDD ,DVD burner 19″ LG LCD for that price).
So, a desktop is a better option and would usable by you ( when you are fighting with acpi and stuff). Also you can download stuff from the desktop rather than keeping a notebook up all night ( I mean the heat).

Last piece of advice, you wont need to buy a LCD, you already have that awesome LCD TV.

Could you clarify, because if doesn’t implement the whole spec then it would be useless.

  8. Just give her a quick tutorial on your Mac and she will be fine. If you still want to buy her a new computer then I would suggest to get a desktop than a netbook.
