Misc Life Updates
* Personal:
- I am almost settled after one month at Ahmedabad and now early looking for new rented house (ie home), 1 or 2BHK.
- Kavin got minor electric shock while playing with switch and socket. Fortunately, my wife was holding him and doctor told that there is nothing to worry. He is `difficult` to handle and long examination of my fatherhood will start soon when they will be here at Ahmedabad.
- Work is going great. I have very good team now!
* Debian:
- Sandro Tosi will be co-maintainer or probably take over sitecopy package from me and will put it under collab-maint repository. Since, I mentioned that I am bit busy with settling down here and it will not be great if such useful package requires time to fix bugs with patches available already.
- D-I translation of Level 1 and 2 for Gujarati language are again 100%. Hunting Level 3 now.
- I am not still able to install Debian properly on my macbook! Only useful source for this is, http://wiki.debian.org/MacBook Any other pointers/docs will be ![]()
fortunes-debian-hints 1.9!
Wait is not yet over!
* As I mentioned in my previous wait() post. I was waiting for laptop from reseller, thats done and my Macbook (White, 2GB RAM, 160 GB HDD etc) finally arrived! Yay!! Spent some time in getting familiar with Mac OS and reading docs for installing Debian on Macbook. I started installation today but due to removal of lilo from Lenny, it was halted
Now, trying again with some more bravery
And, I am also waiting for FD to wake up from 2 months of AM report. No big issues in it though..
.. and I got RC Bug!
* #410703 Long pending. Help is required. Unfortunately, before I act on it, severity was raised to ‘grave’. See bug logs for more details.
Patches are most welcome from Developers (I was told to not ask patches from users. Thanks!)
And, I still don’t have Debian machine. The option is to get al-cheapo ASUS eee PC quickly to start whatever Debian work I can do or my dream is to wait and have Macbook ![]()
fortunes-debian-hints: call for translations
* You may have seen my mail to Debian-i18n list. `fortunes-debian-hints` package is open for translation. It has just 42 strings to translate. I want my mailbox flooded with ‘translations’, folks!
Many thanks to Nicolas François for adding fortunes cookie support in po4a. We are now able to use .po based translation instead of plain text translation for hints files. This will make life easy for both me and dear translators.
New release will come up in 15 days. So far, I have got news that de and pt team will make it!!
xosview bug hunting…
* One fine day (two days back), Michael Karcher reported two bugs with patches for xosview. I just asked him to take a look at other existing bugs if he has time, and you know, he looked over all bugs and sent 3 more patches.
Thanks Michael for your contribution!
I am now reading/learning more about famous tool Valgrind.
You can always look at xosview bugs here.
KDE 4.1 beta migration
* Even I am on much needed unofficial vacation because of job transition (more on this later when its done!) and even after enough playing with Kavin, I had enough time to switch to KDE 4.1 beta (4.0.80). Here are my some points and experiences which may help you in migration.
* I assume that you are running Debian
* First, follow, ana’s detailed help to switch to KDE 4.1 beta.
* Panel can be resized and configure now. That sliders are so sweet. But, if you find that your KDE desktop becomes ‘white’ as Gandalf the white, do following:
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc.OLDANDHATED
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc.OLDANDHATED
Thanks to pinotree for help!
* kmail and friends (kontact..) will not be migrated properly, as they are using .kde, just cp -r .kde/share/apps to .kde4/share/apps will help.
* I can find everything in kontact works perfect after migration. You just need to reconfigure your pop/smtp settings. I am figuring out why it wasn’t happen. Also, kaddressbook is missing all email address, but that should not be big issue as I have backup using Gmail’s web addressbook.
* I just saw that Peter and Fathi (fabo) mentioned their experiences (and answers) too. pusling continues thread too ![]()
Your Lintian Report, Sir
* You will now able to see Lintian info and overridden tags (ie full report) from your main Lintian report page. Thanks to djpig for quick fix!
Meeting with Kstar and Weekend
* Mistake happens in Life. I did it too, you may have done it in the past. There is no point of digging grave. Probably time to do some work to make sure that it will not happen again.
* Kstar (Akarsh Simha, GSoC candidate of KDE Project, Kstars) is in city (I mean his hometown!) enjoying his vacation, so I decided to meet him on Friday. I wanted to do it on Saturday but some other plan was there which indeed never happen and that is another story itself. Anyway, we met near MG Road/Brigade Road junction and went to Pizza Hut. Nice discussion of 2 hours, nice pizzas and finally mandatory click. We talked from Debian to FOSS culture in IITM (Note that IITM has 2 most active DDs from India!).
* So, my Saturday was totally wasted due to silly things. Dear Kushal was not there in town — so, none was there to annoy from me. I thought I was able to wash my all dirty clothes in the morning but, it was power cut! I waited till 12PM to bathe (Indeed, you can’t take bath without power as bathroom is too dark, and I fear cockroach too much).
Power went again around 6 PM and I went outside, wondered here and there, came back to home. Still no power. OMG, it came after 10.30 PM!
Yet another reason to hate this city, BLR.
[VAC] Till I get Debian machine!
* I have no longer pure Debian machine access available to me for unknown time
So, obviously, I will not able to update my packages (most packages need no update and migrated into testing already, some are waiting for sponsor to uploads). All are under LowThresholdNmu. Feel free to do NMU without asking me, if RC/RG bug appears
I will have IRC/Mail etc access though.
Enjoy Madi!
Meanwhile, I am enjoying beer, movies, learning Python and finishing readinglong pending books.
oops. forgot it!
* Ooops. I forgot to thank my dear AM, adn, in public. My AM Report is out! Thanks a lot! It was really wonderful experience of NM Process with you enjoying ups and downs like real life from my side and learning something new from each mail from you ![]()
