KDE 4.1 beta migration
* Even I am on much needed unofficial vacation because of job transition (more on this later when its done!) and even after enough playing with Kavin, I had enough time to switch to KDE 4.1 beta (4.0.80). Here are my some points and experiences which may help you in migration.
* I assume that you are running Debian
* First, follow, ana’s detailed help to switch to KDE 4.1 beta.
* Panel can be resized and configure now. That sliders are so sweet. But, if you find that your KDE desktop becomes ‘white’ as Gandalf the white, do following:
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasmarc.OLDANDHATED
mv ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc.OLDANDHATED
Thanks to pinotree for help!
* kmail and friends (kontact..) will not be migrated properly, as they are using .kde, just cp -r .kde/share/apps to .kde4/share/apps will help.
* I can find everything in kontact works perfect after migration. You just need to reconfigure your pop/smtp settings. I am figuring out why it wasn’t happen. Also, kaddressbook is missing all email address, but that should not be big issue as I have backup using Gmail’s web addressbook.
* I just saw that Peter and Fathi (fabo) mentioned their experiences (and answers) too. pusling continues thread too ![]()
Congratulations Kumar!
* My (and from entire Debian-IN team too) heartily congratulations Kumar (kmap) on being NEW shiny DD.
Congratulations Steve!
* Congratulations to Steve McIntyre for winning DPL election.
Just finished…
* … I just finished installation of Ubuntu 10.

fortunes-debian-hints
* Fortune is nice. Combination of Fortune and Debian can be much nicer! If you have encounter ‘tips and tricks’ while working with Debian system, you might want to contribute some useful tips to Debian users. Have a look at wiki page of FortunesDebianHints Hints can be from pointing useful package to short command that can be useful in daily activity for system admins. Look at previous hints for example.
You can also comment here or drop me mail to me.
Freed.in/2008: /me too
* I am not going to Freed.in/2008 too! Damn. I’ll miss amazing talks and friends.
mv icedove clawsmail
* In my constant carvings about sane email client, I found that claws in lightweight and very well email client. Icedove to claws migration was not so easy, but script did it! And, it was fun to read Planet Claws-mail too!
I hope that someday, enigmail will work (again) with icedove!
Book Review: Beginning Fedora: From Novice to Professional

(Image: From Amazon.com)
What I am doing with Fedora? Nothing! But, when Shashank Sharma, my friend from New Delhi, sent me complementary copy of this book, I couldn’t resist myself to read it (yes, entire book). Excellent, well written book and must have for Feodra users/power users. It contains DVD of latest Fedora 7 too. And it also deals with general Linux stuffs (which I liked most in this book). I even recommended this book to my wife!
Great job Shashank and Keir Thomas (co-author).
Getting gitty with it..
* Martin (madduck) posted really nice (and long..) tutorial of ‘Packaging with Git‘. Highly recommended.
Freed.in/07
* One of the best ever event Freed.in is over (although, some people are enjoying at Manali right now!). I came back on last night.
* I reached Delhi on Thursday night. Grepping JNU was easy due to pre-paid taxi from airport. Got my room at Aravali Hostel and found none of the known person at first site. Oldmonk’s reply to my call, ‘where are you?’ was hilarious one. Finally, I found Karunakar and we enjoyed ‘Maggie’ at 12 AM.
* Both days were entirely full of fun. I talked about ‘Debian-IN‘ project. Unfortunately, my talk got last place on schedule (I think due to track allocation etc) and so, number of people was less. The fun thing was that whole #linux-india channel (almost, except famous Lap_64) was there. And channel was so quite during 2 days..
* With very limited time in our hand, we (me and tuxmaniac) visited Qutub Minar, India Gate and famous Delhi Metro (by traveling to/from random station!). Flickr photos are up.
